One might think, if one were designing a facility to produce thermonuclear weapons of mass destruction, that the first design consideration would be security. One would be wrong—if one were working for the US National Nuclear Security Administration designing the Uranium Processing Facility for the Y12 Nuclear Weapons Complex in Oak Ridge, TN, that is.
The July 28 Transform Now Plowshares action revealed a stunning disregard for security at Y12. Now, after more than $15 million has been spent on security enhancements post-July 28, the UPF design still stands, above ground, exposed to all the world. See OREPA's Alarm Memo here:
